Whispering Waves

Whispering Waves  captures a quieter conversation with the ocean—the gentle rhythm of water approaching the shore, the shifting blues of changing depths, and the sense of calm that comes from simply being near the sea.

Created on an upcycled surfboard, the work moves through layers of deep cobalt and ocean blue into luminous turquoise and aqua before meeting a softly textured, sand-toned shoreline. The gradual transition of color suggests the view of the Atlantic as water moves from its deeper reaches toward the coast.

Unlike the dramatic energy of a breaking wave, Whispering Waves is about the ocean’s softer voice. Subtle variations and fluid transitions evoke water in continuous motion—the quiet push and pull of the tide, the shimmer of light across its surface, and the almost meditative repetition of waves arriving on shore.

The surfboard brings another layer of meaning to the work. Once created to travel across the surface of the water, it has been transformed into a sculptural canvas that preserves that connection to the sea. Its elongated form naturally leads the eye from deep water to shoreline, creating a sense of movement through the composition.

As with much of my work, the tactile qualities are important. The surface encourages close exploration, allowing color, texture and physical form to work together as a sensory experience rather than something intended only to be viewed from a distance.

Whispering Waves is a reflection on those moments when the ocean doesn’t roar—it whispers.

A reminder that sometimes the quietest waves are the ones we feel most deeply.
