Chromatic Surge transforms an upcycled surfboard into a sculptural celebration of the ocean’s energy. A concentrated current of turquoise, aqua, emerald, and deep blue travels vertically through the board, creating the impression of water surging through an otherwise quiet, neutral surface.
The highly textured central passage gives the work its physical and visual power. Irregular ridges, crevices, and layered pigments recall the constantly changing character of the sea—from translucent shallows and flashes of tropical green to the saturated blues of deeper water. Rather than depicting a wave literally, the piece captures its force, movement, and unpredictability.
The contrast between the restrained outer surface and the intense ribbon of color creates a sense of water breaking through—an energetic release that seems to travel the full length of the board. Variations in texture catch light differently throughout the day, allowing the work to continually shift depending on the viewer’s perspective.
By using a surfboard as both canvas and sculptural form, Chromatic Surge connects the artwork directly to the environment that inspired it. Once designed to move across the surface of the ocean, the board is given a second life as fine art—its new surface preserving the color, movement, and raw energy of the water it once traveled.
